Dubl+ Greco Spumante, Campania, Italy
A one-of-a-kind southern Italian fizz, combining Feudi di San Gregorio’s mastery of the local Greco grape (of Greco di Tufofame) with the sparkling wine wizardry (fizzardry?!) of legendary Champagne maverick, Anselme Selosse. And while Selosse’s champagnes will set you back a few hundred pounds a bottle, the lower profile of southern Italy’s wines means that you can experience the work of one of the world’s great sparkling wine makers for significantly less.
Minerally and oh-so-elegant, this Greco Spumante is a
sparkler born to be paired with sushi or shellfish.
Villa Cialdini Lambrusco Rosso Grasparossa di Castelvetro, Emilia-Romagna, Italy
Forget everything you remember about Lambrusco from the nineties… that sickly, bargain-shelf fizz has pretty much nothing in common with the real stuff enjoyed for decades in Italy. And it doesn’t get much more authentic than the delightful Lambrusco Grasparossa from top producer, Villa Cialdini.
This outstanding off-dry sparkling red comes from the sub-region of Castelvetro, home of the very finest Lambruscos, and offers charming notes of forest fruits and wild flowers.
M Chapoutier Saint Péray “La Muse de Wagner”, Northern Rhône, France
Once upon a time, the sparkling wines of Saint Péray were prized far beyond those of Champagne, and counted composer Richard Wagner among their many fans (hence the name, La Muse de Wagner). And though it may have been beaten in the race for worldwide fame by the superior marketing budgets of the Champenois, Saint Péray continues to produce some
With notes of honeysuckle and hazelnut from the indigenous Marsanne grape, this charmer is so good that the producer reckons it may well deserve sole credit for inspiring Wagner’s great works… So pop on Ride of the Valkyries, pop open a bottle of Saint Péray, and party like it’s 1869.
