All things English to help you celebrate St George's Day!

English Whisky Co. “Chapter 6” Single Malt Whisky
Sorry Scotland, we’re muscling in on your territory. No, not the deep-fried Mars bars. You can keep those. We’re in the whisky game now. And we play it pretty well! Sadly, when I say “we”, I don’t mean that hangingditch has branched out into distilling. Stepping up for team England is The English Whisky Co., based at St George’s Distillery in Norfolk.

Their Chapter 6 single malt is sweetly fragrant, with notes of pear, marzipan and cut grass. The palate is quite full-bodied, with plenty of texture and a nutty, slightly citrusy character. One for the whisky-lover looking to try something a bit different!

Chase English Oak Smoked Vodka
England probably isn’t the first place that springs to mind when you hear the word “vodka”, but that hasn’t stopped the Herefordshire-based Chase distillery from making a splash in a market dominated by mega-brands. Their smoked vodka - a limited-edition offering, smoked using English oak - is particularly special.

It makes a brilliant Bloody Mary and pairs fabulously with smoked salmon sandwiches for a very British take on caviar and vodka. If anyone’s ever made potatoes taste better than this, we want to hear about it!

And now back to wine!

Bride Valley Brut Reserve Sparkling Wine 2014
Steven Spurrier may not be a household name, but he’s a pretty big deal in the wine world. He’s written for a host of illustrious publications, organised probably the most famous wine tasting of all time (the “Judgement of Paris”), and was named Decanter Magazine’s Man of the Year 2017.

So when he decided to start producing sparkling wine in Dorset, we knew we had to try it. And we weren’t disappointed - the Brut Reserve (a classic blend of Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Pinot Meunier) is an elegant elderflower-and-pear-scented delight that puts many of the big Champagne names to shame.

Stopham Estate Pinot Blanc 2014
While the English sparkling wine movement has already won over many consumers (and much of the wine press), most people are yet to try an English white wine without bubbles. So it’s about time everyone made the acquaintance of the utterly charming Stopham Estate Pinot Blanc.

With a nose like a summer meadow and a palate like a country orchard, this really couldn’t be much more English. So pray for a sunny day, pack a picnic and enjoy a bottle or two of Sussex’s finest.
